Rain, Rain, Go Away

It's been raining since I got back from Florida on the 5th of June. We are growing webbed feet. The tomatos will have the flavor of rain water, or cardboard, or elements of both. Tomatoes need sun. Curses!

This weekend, peaches were on sale. Bought peaches, strawberries, bananas, etc. Now everything is ripe at once. Making a peach crisp, but it serves eight and we are two. Grapeshot and S.O. plus eight.

It took me the longest time to figure out who Jon and Kate were, and now they are getting a divorce with eight little kids. These reality show suck more than anything. But they are popular and of course, they're cheap to produce. Give me Entourage, or Damages or In Treatment any day. Hell, I'll even take Hercule Poirot. Love the golf, love the baseball. Even tennis. Real reality, real drama, real conflict, not a bunch of b.s. I like authenticity.

Writing a bit again. Much to do. Miles to go.

A friend sent a link to some flickr photos. Near Gerlach, Nevada, as the end of the road, but not the railroad. Fab. photos, and what a rainbow. Noah himself must have ordered it.

The 4 Day Vacation - continued

Representations of habitations that will weather naturally at the Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. This is a relatively new museum, and what a great one. I'll have more photos in upcoming days. And we just loved the cafeteria featuring native ingredients.

Our Saturday night meal was at Poste, in the Hotel Monaco right in the heart of town by the hockey stadium and a gazillion restaurants. Poste Moderne Brasserie is the complete name. I shared Steak Tartare with S.O. So yummy. Live dangerously, I say. My entree was calves liver with onions three ways, and a crisp slice of bacon. S.O. had a fab. bouef bourgignon and we shared a chocolate dessert that was pure dark chocolate with tiny little scoops of port wine ice cream, carrying delicious to a new height. The menu contained many entrees that sounded tempting. Don't you love it when what to order is the biggest decision you have to make all day? I do.

Back into Monday mode, with all that entails. Had to watch Damages last night to get caught up. Always some new betrayal or conflict. Good.

Now I need to pay some attention to my novel.

Bad Habits of 2008 + My Shabby Little Secret

O.K., so I've been working out during the new year, but not one, but two new habits are gaining ground and it's so annoying.

1) TV Watching

2) Eating after dinner

For years, I barely watched anything. Lost? The Wire? American Idol? Never seen nuthin.'
Last summer I began watching the Glen Close legal series on Fox, Damages, and was hooked. Didn't miss a single one. Fox was pushing Nip/Tuck which I always thought was a reality series. Not so. Loved the ads and the music and started watching Nip/Tuck. It's sick, it's vapid, dammit,it's addictive. I've missed a few, but basically I'm now a Nip/Tuck watcher. Love the Jerry David show, Curb Y0ur Enthusiasm --I laugh like an idiot. It's so weird but I identify with him. My shabby little secret.

What else? The food channel. I read that people hated Rachel Ray, so I had to find out why. Watched her program. Hey, they're wrong! She's fun, she's perky, she cooks dinner in half an hour. What's not to like? I love the Barefoot Contessa, the southern lady, practically homemade or whatever it's called, love Emeril, and Gaia. Have you noticed the cleavage and no one ever wears an apron or splashes or splatters or absentmindedly wipes her hands on her butt, forgetting momentarily she isn't wearing jeans? Love the Food Channel. I watch it while ironing or if I feel like lying down for a nap, which thank god, is one bad habit I haven't adopted.

This eating after dinner. I know where it comes from. Comes from eating a #%^^&**diet dinner, and then about 9:30 the munchies arrive. A substantial solid high cal dinner would never do that. You rub your stomach and groan. First I nip into the cookies, just one, then the chocolate, a small piece, then the nuts--way too many. Hell, I should have had mashed potatoes and gravy.

So I am also watching public TV and the History Channel and the last 30 minutes of whatever movie is on--tonight it was Married To the Mob and always a hoot. In short I am becoming an indiscriminate viewer. Like the Miami Crime Scene Investigation. But then I always liked Miami Vice. Vice is good in Miami, not so good in Boston.

The rains came and the thunder just rolled and Annie the Cat took off out her her rocking chair and ran under something. Today is Friday, remember, Cat Blog Day, and so a mention is O.K. Thisbe has been coming into the home office all week, and Annie chases her out.

Still no bean dip at Roche Bros., but I was vocally lamenting lack and a fellow shopper said, "Stop and Stop" has it, and everyone else has stopped carrying it, so I need to get some before The Big Game. Last night I even watched a Super Bowl program on HBO. I mean, really.

Writers will do anything to avoid writing. But I can't believe I'm watching TV. But now I'm writing. Blog doesn't count. Blogging is what we do to avoid the NOVEL. For shame.

The Inciting Incident

Beginning a novel is the pits. Where to start? Start too early and the story bogs down. Start too late and you end up with a skid load of flash backs. The current wisdom is to start at the "inciting incident." At least for us mystery-writing folks.

You can describe the incident, but you have to get in a little (not too much) about the main character, and whet the reader's appetite, and appeal to the senses, and have a nice little hook. And don't start with the weather. And prologues are passe. Cripes the rules start to get a little intimidating, and then every other book one picks up breaks them, and rather elegantly, too.

This writing business is hard, I tell you. But you knew that.

In 14 minutes I'm going to watch Glen Close and company in Damages. It's the one thing I've been watching consistently since the Sopranos, but I think Big Love is pretty good, too. And yeah, I watch the Red Sox. And the food channel when I'm ironing or want to chill or maybe even take a nap.

Now it's 10 minutes. Up the stairs I go.
