Hurricane Alley

New England frequently gets the tail end of the hurricanes that come up the East Coast. We are currently being rained on by the latest storm to hit the Bahamas. Had to go out today, and got drenched, but the wind wasn't as fierce as forecast.

I wore old jeans, old shirt, rain jacket and old shoes. The shoes need to be tossed out, but I bought them in San Francisco a couple weeks after September 11th and it seems somehow disrepectful to ditch them. I bought more shoes in Union Square, really good ones that are still like new. Somehow, buying shoes must have seemed like a belief in a future. I almost never wear them but I think about that week and how dreadful and crazy everything was. I remember the stress of getting on a plane back then, and the week I flew to Baltimore just when the anthrax scare was at its worst, and the cell phones still didn't work in Hagerstown and eating dinner alone in a restaurant in the hotel and how weird everything was, just totally weird and we thought nothing could ever be normal again and maybe it still isn't.

Bleak thoughts on a rainy night. The cat looks up at the skylight as if she is afraid the rain will start coming right through it onto the living room floor. She is the cat who thinks water is only to drink, and looks at it with horror if it's not in her bowl.

It is nice to be home and cozy on this rain-splashed, windy Saturday night in November.
